Oh So Silly!!

Bunny ears, crazy glasses, funny socks and colorful hair pieces were so in style tonight! We donned our silly outfits and gathered this evening to celebrate a creative, entertaining - "Just Plain Silly Night". The library opened its doors to offer a primetime storyhour. The evening bursted at the seams with crazy, silly fun. We began the night creating two crazy crafts: silly pens & crazy hair people. We then gathered to "Shake Our Sillies Out" and listen to several silly stories: "Don't Be Sillie Mrs. Millie", "Wiggle", and "Silly Sally". We topped off the evening with some the tasty treats: Ants on a Log, Gigglers & Funny Face Crackers. All participants also went home with a free book and an egg of homemade silly putty.

Are You Ready?

Every Child Ready to Read!
We stepped beyond the basic storyhour program and offered our families with pre-school aged children a program to learn about the six early literacy skills that help prepare children to be successful in school. The three sessions provided parents the opportunity to gain valueable information and skills about:

Phonological Awareness
Vocabulary
Narrative Skills
Print Awareness
Letter Knowledge
Print Motivation
The helpful, factual information was intermixed with great activities for the children and parents. We received another perk for attending - great goody giveways: books, magnet letters, playdough, book bags and more. Our local elementary school principal also visited our class to provide additional information about kindergarten readiness. Such a great educational opportunity for parents and children alike!

Recreating the Classics

From the Three Little Pigs, Princess and the Pea and the Three Billy Goats Gruff we went back to the classics today. We also included Goldilocks and the Three Bears, but not in the usual way. With a growl from Papa, an ahhh from Mama, and humph from Baby bear we performed an interactive rap for this classic tale. We then constructed our own three little pig houses.

Straw
Sticks
Bricks

Our Princess and the Pea tale included a chance to test our own abilities of being a real princess. Can you pass the test, do you feel the pea?

Finally we reinacted the Three Billy Goats Gruffs trip, trip, trapping over our special bridge. Even our youngest attendee, Walker, 7 months, put his best foot forward.

Who said classic means boring - not at our storyhour!

Farm Fun

The kids had fun singing songs like Old MacDonald and B-I-N-G-O and reading books like Farm Flu, Cock-a-doodle Moo, and Barnyard Banter. We 'painted' mud on pigs for the craft, which tasted a whole lot like chocolate pudding! Yummy!

Magical Musical Moments

Tra-la-la-la, we performed some wonderful musical moments today. We listened to a variety of sounds from a motorcycle engine to a telephone ringing and tried our best to guess what we heard. We used homemade instruments (filled plastic eggs) to keep beat. Watch our great performance in the video below.

We added a few rhythm sticks, a xylophone, a tambourine and a drum to enhance the beat of the marching song. This performance also got caught on tape - enjoy below.

We interacted with some action rhymes/songs, created our own rhythm eggs to take home and then the kids really cut loose. With music playing in the background and parents chatting, the kids danced and raced in typical crazy kid style. Diddle-de-dum, we sure had fun!

Love in the Air!

Special books, songs and crafts captured the loving feeling of the upcoming Valentine's Day holiday. "HUG" by Jez Alborough and "Just for You" by Mercer Mayer and many others shared with us about love and hugs. This fun song really fit the mood.

Skida Ma Rink a Dink
Skida ma rink a dink, a dink
Skida ma rink a doo, I love you!
Skida ma rink a dink, a dink
Skida ma rink a doo, I love you!
I love you in the morning,
And in the afternoon,
I love you in the evening,
And underneath the moon.
Oh, Skida ma rink a dink, a dink
Skida ma rink a doo, I love you!
We then gathered around the craft table to create beautiful handcrafted Valentine wishes. Here's the group crafting!
